Marketing Principles is a yearlong high-school marketing course addressing marketing concepts identified in the National Standards for Marketing Education. This rigorous course’s scope aligns with that found in college-level introductory marketing courses. Several hands-on, standards-based projects are provided to appeal to a variety of learning styles.

The course develops student understanding and skills in the functional areas of marketing: channel management, marketing-information management, market planning, pricing, product/service management, promotion, and selling. Students acquire an understanding and appreciation of ethical and legal issues confronting marketers, the use of technology in the marketing functions, marketing strategies, market segmentation, branding, marketing-research activities, quality considerations, the sales process, and current promotional methods. In addition, resources are cited for each learning outcome, which has been crosswalked with 21st Century Skills and SCANS. Two one-hundred item multiple-choice tests are included for end of semester assessment.

Sections of the course guide include:

Section 1: Introduction to the course that provides premises for the curriculum, an explanation of the curriculum framework and its components, and a description of curriculum-planning levels.

Section 2: Course philosophy, course goals, course purpose, and explanation of the role of career-tech student organizations in the course.

Section 3: Course description, listing of learning outcomes addressed, suggested course sequence, characteristics of students enrolled in the course, admission requirements, explanation of recommended instructional strategies, and identification of prerequisites for course enrollment.

Section 4: Course sequence that identifies a recommended order for teaching the learning outcomes.

Section 5: Planning guide sheets that specify each learning outcome and its instructional objectives, crosswalks with SCANS and 21st Century Skills, sample activities to reinforce the learning outcomes, and a listing of resources that provide information supporting the instructional objectives.

Section 6: Hands-on projects that pull together several learning outcomes.
